IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT
Alex is showing with a mix of Los Angeles core abstractionists like Chuck Arnoldi and Ed Moses and cross-over abstract/surfer types lke David Lloyd, Andy Moses and Ned Evans. The space is small, clean and well-lighted. The mix of artists is potent. I hope some of you in Orange and San Diego counties will find the time to stop in (and spread the word!) There's a rumor of fresh, carne asada tacos... Could be a blast...

Hulls around this length are my favorite. Andreini once told me that he and his friends started making really short stubbies in the 5'10" to 6'0" range so they could surf like Greenough and crank really hard turns. These boards have a moderate displacement hull coupled with a modern rail profile so you can really drive them hard without losing that weightless hull sensation. Here's Eli Mirandon on the 5'11" choco-stub via the CrappyCam...

Stringerless boards tend to follow the path of least resistance by flexing and twisting to conform to the shape of a turn. The lower rocker is faster down the line, and when you go into a bottom turn the tail begins to flex and store energy that's released at the transition of your line. I made one for Joe Curren last year and he said the board did just about everything he would want a fish to do.
