Florida shredder Reese Lewis sent in this photo from a recent wet t-shirt contest he won in New Smyrna Beach, Flawduh. 5'6" double-wing stringerless quad fish for HB flex...yeeeeehawwww!!!
I glass the stringerless boards with a double 4oz or even double 5oz bottom so there's a similar strength to the deck. The deck is undergoing compression and the bottom is flexing, so if you have similar weight cloth they're working together.
I prefer to make my stringerless boards a bit shorter to minimize the chance of breakage. You can go longer but you end up having to use more glass. You could call that a disadvantage if you agree with the "lighter is better" design ethos.
Flex and twist are some of the advantages of a boneless design. Why not have flex from your back foot to the tip of the swallowtail? You can determine the amount of flex just by moving your back foot around...
Thanks for the detailed explanation. "Lighter is better" if you're a 140 pound hyper grom, but my bottom half weighs nearly that much. Think I'll stick with bonified boards for now, but I love the progressive vibe. Still have one of your wingless quad fishes on my wish list.
Holla y'alls!

ReplyDeletewhat are the advantages/disadvantages of going stringerless? I'm afraid I'd snap it like my 1979 two tone boogie board.
